New Steam Process to Remove Carbon
Industrial scientists are developing a simple way to use waste steam from production plants to reduce their carbon footprint.
The scientists have been working with solid materials that contain amines as the amines are effective at removing the carbon dioxide from flue gases that are emitted from facilities that burn coal, such as power stations.
Scientists have come up with a very simple but effective technique using the waste steam that is a common feature of fossil fuel burning plants.

Better Pest Control with Organic Agriculture
Washington State University has found that organic farms are better at fighting pests. The researchers discovered that there was a much better balance of animal and plant communities on organic farms compared to standard high intensive farms and this resulted in bigger and healthier crops.
For the experiment, the researchers chose to test a potato crop and by regular analysis they found there to be a more balanced insect population in which no one species was able to dominate. Plants in these balanced environments grew better.

Massage Reduces Chronic Tension Headache
University of Granada researchers have shown that a 30 minute massage is able to reduce tension headache symptoms. The project involved cooperation between the University of Granada, the University Rey Juan Carlos and the Clinical Hospital San Cecilio. Between them they revealed how massage changes the physiological as well as psychological state of tension headache patients inside of 24 hours from receiving the massage.
The standard treatment for tension headaches, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in the population, is to administer analgesics, but these only temporarily relieve the symptoms. The researchers already understood that one of the main reasons for the development of tension headaches is the presence of trigger points, which are specific points on the body that literally trigger pain or headaches.
Leader of the study..Cristina Toro Velasco..worked on massaging the cervical trigger points of her patients for 30 minutes in order to improve the regulation of the autonomic nervous system. Interestingly, the treatment led to both a physiological improvement as well as a better psychological state...
Within 24 hours of treatment, the patients were reporting relief from their symptoms. The researchers think that this was due to the massage lowering the pain activated by the trigger points which in turn resulted in a better general sense of well being in the patients.

Half the World is Vitamin D Deficient
Vitamin D is appearing in the news a lot recently, mostly due to deficiency of it. There have been several opinions abounding on what is the correct recommended daily amount of Vitamin D and also what is the best source of vitamin D.
Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, Anthony Norman is an internationally recognised expert on vitamin D. He says that there is insufficient Vitamin D intake for over half the people of Western Europe and North America.

| Mile High Yoga |
 |
|
A merge of yoga and science occurred last month when pilot Andre Borschberg made history flying a solar-powered aircraft for 26 hours.
What's this go to do with yoga? Well, as well as an uncomfortable seat and a vibrating jacket, Borschberg credited yoga and breathing exercises for helping keep him awake during the epic flight. Seated asanas kept his blood flowing and pranayama kept him alert and calm. Here's the full story from The Independent.
Solar-powered travel and yoga - we're impressed!

| Yoga, New York style |
 |
|
Mass yoga sessions are fast becoming a popular way of practicing and often fundraising for charitable causes.
We loved this photo of a recent mass yoga session in New York, organised to coincide with the summer solstice. Attendees were challenged to find tranquility and transcendence in the midst of the world's most commercial and frenetic place, Times Square.
For Yoga closer to home, our Lewes classes start on Monday 13th September.

I'm sure, like me, you receive emails that you know you should read but don't because you are too busy dealing with other important things. Luckily I read this one.
It is the message a teenage girl with cancer wants the world to hear.
Slow Dance
Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask 'How are you?' do you hear the reply?
When the day is done do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores running through your head?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time to call and say,'Hi'
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over."

Life Coaching Tips from Laurence
As part of our 10th Birthday celebrations
this year we decided to provide a new useful free service for all readers...we asked for your suggestions of what you'd most like to see and you kindly responded - free monthly tips came top of the list.
In the past we've featured seasonal healthy tips such as hay fever advice, handling coughs and colds, how to minimise jet lag etc - these are still available through archive newsletters (see below).
This time round we asked Laurence for his best Life Coaching tips...and before we knew it a new series was launched!
So here goes, with Tip No. 1. Please feel free to pass on any useful ideas to friends & family.
1. Making Goals Achievable
"Try breaking your goals down into achievable chunks. Sometimes our goals can be quite big and so feel distant to us.
By focusing on the small steps which we need to take to achieve our larger ambitions, these larger goals can start to feel a lot more real."
To get support in achieving your goals, contact Laurence at Equilibrium on 01273 470955 to book yourself some Life Coaching, or see our special Life Coaching page for more information.
