Fibromyalgia Risk Greater in Sleepless Women

There is a triple sized higher risk of developing fibromyalgia in women who have sleep disorders. That is the verdict from researchers in Norway who carried out a study on the effects of sleeplessness and fibromyalgia.

Although the researchers stress that disturbed sleep does not automatically result in the development of the condition, there is certainly a clear connection between insomnia and disturbed sleep and the risk of suffering from fibromyalgia inside of 10 years.

Panda Poo Microbes Help Make Biofuel

Researchers have discovered that the microbes found within Panda excretions are effective cellulose digestors. In order to make biofuels from crop wastes, grass and wood chips a much more powerful process is required than the one used for corn and many other food sources. That is because wood chips and grass, etc are much tougher.

Ashli Brown, Ph.D, the study co-author said, "Who would have guessed that 'panda poop' might help solve one of the major hurdles to producing biofuels, which is optimizing the breakdown of the raw plant materials used to make the fuels?"

She also added that "We hope our research will help expand the use of biofuels in the future and help cut dependency on foreign oil. We also hope it will reinforce the importance of wildlife conservation."

    Obesity pic

Patients 'should be asked about their habits every time they see NHS staff'

Patients should be asked about their diet, smoking and drinking habits every time they see a health professional according to radical proposals from the government's NHS advisers to tackle soaring rates of obesity, cancer and alcohol misuse.

The NHS Future Forum wants health staff to routinely talk to patients about their lifestyles, even when they are suffering an unrelated illness, and offer them advice and help to become healthier.

The forum is urging a transformation in the relationship between medical staff and patients in order to reduce the toll of ill-health and the cost to the NHS caused by the sharply rising numbers of people with conditions linked to lifestyle.

Its call for a switch to a policy of "make every contact count" is the centrepiece of its forthcoming report on public health, commissioned by the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, which will be submitted to the Department of Health and published on 10 January.

One of our acupuncturists, Anna de Moor, will also be giving a talk at the Festival on Saturday 14th January at 4.00pm.

In her talk titled 'Acupunture and your life - or why do pirates wear earrings?' Anna will outline the principles underlying both Acupunture and Traditional Chinese Medicine regarding well being and ill health. She will show how these age old ideas are relevant to living a wholesome and healthy life in the world today, and will explore some of the core tenets of Chinese Medicine in its holisitic view of the body.

Anna will look at the Chinese understanding of Qi, the Acupuncture channels and how acupuncture can be used to help bring the body into health and balance. These ancient views of health and treatment are as vital as ever for well being with today's modern lifestyles.

    The Amazing Sweet Potato
    Sweet Potato pic

    Wonder food?

Although the sweet potato is not as popular as many other vegetables, it has very high nutritional value. Just one 7 ounce serving of this root crop will provide you with 65% of your body's daily vitamin C requirement.

One of the concerns people have about sweet potato is just that; it's sweet. However not all sweet is equal. What is more important than the sugar content is the glycemic index which is a measure of how fast the substance will enter the blood stream as sugar and impact the blood sugar levels. A high glycemic index is to be avoided especially for diabetics. Amazingly sweet potato only has a glycemic index of 17 whereas the ordinary white potato has an index of 29. Sweet potato's low glycemic index is kept by boiling or steaming them as opposed to roasting.

The skins of sweet potato contain a lot of the agents that give the root its health benefits and so for that reason it is better to wash them well and keep the skins on.

One of the other benefits of beta-carotene which is contained in sweet potato is that it reduces the speed of skin aging by combating free radicals.

Sweet potatoes contain high levels of potassium which is an important mineral fro relieving muscle cramps and generally relieving stress in the body the result of which is experienced as tension.

They are fairly easy to grow in any back garden as they only need 100 days free from frost in order to grow to full size. What also makes them a great crop for new vegetable growers to start with is that they need little maintenance, requiring only minimal fertilizer or water. They also suffer from fewer diseases compared to their white potato relative.
