Relaxing Extends Cancer Survival
A study has revealed that women with breast cancer are able to extend cancer survival by learning to relax. The study conducted in the U.S. examined the survival rates of women who had their cancer return after their initial treatment. The group of women volunteers worked with psychologists to come up with ways to reduce stress; stress being one of the main causes of cancer complications.
Reducing stress levels enabled the immune system to remain strong and resulted in Improvements in the quality of the women's lives. The women who were part of the support group that helped them deal with stress lived on average 6 months longer than those that did not.

Student Designs Bicycle Water Pump
A University of Sheffield student has designed a bicycle that can pump water upto 26 metres high. A student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield, Jon Leary, went to Guatemala to `make something useful out of rubbish´ as part of his dissertation.
Working with Guatemalan NGO Maya Pedal, a bicycle company that is sent all manner of discarded bicycles from the USA and Canada, Jon set to work to create a water pump that would be both powered and transported by bicycle. The bicycle powered pump is now in production at the factory and is being used for general water distribution and irrigation.
NGO Maya Pedal was established to build machines that are operated from "human-powered sustainable energy sources". So far, they have developed a bicycle washing machine and a corn grinder.

Geothermal to Power all of Canada
A study has revealed that there is a massive availability of geothermal energy in Canada. Geothermal energy is the method of tapping into the extremely high temperatures that exist deeper within the earths crust. These constant high temperatures can be used to turn turbines that create electricity.
The top geothermal researchers in Canada have concluded two studies that revealed how much potential exists in Canada for geothermal systems. The results suggest Canada could be powered many times over just from geothermal.

| Flying abroad this summer? Tips to reduce your jet lag |
 |
|
Jet lag manifests itself as symptoms of drowsiness, lethargy, dulling of memory and clarity, co-ordination problems, bloating, gassiness, diarrhoea, constipation, headaches and an ability to fall asleep even though tired.
Jet lag is caused when you travel across time zones in a plane. Normally our 24-hour body clock is in sync with our environment. When we travel across time zones, however, the day is longer or shorter than 24 hours and the body forgets where it is. As it cannot adjust immediately, you feel out of balance or "jetlagged". Travelling East shortens your day and makes jetlag much worse than travelling West, where your day is prolonged.
What can you do? We've got a dozen suggestions to help relieve jet lag:
1. Drink lots of water during the flight to combat dehydration.
2. Take Camomile tea bags with you to drink during the flight, as well as plenty of bottled mineral water.
3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol while flying.
4. Eat lightly before, during and after the flight. Take some fresh fruit with you to snack on.
5. Try to schedule the flight for your normal sleep time so you can sleep on the flight and arrive at your usual waking time. Take an eye mask to block out the lights from inside the plane, and a shawl to keep you warm as the temperature can drop.
6. Take a high dose antioxidant containing 1000mg Vitamin C - this will combat the worse excesses of dehydration, stress, and fatigue.
7. Homeopathy - take Arnica 30c every 3 hours during the flight to allow your body to adapt. On arrival take Kali Phos 6x for fatigue 3 times a day until your body has adjusted to the new time zone.
8. Take the Australian Bush Flower essence formula called Travel Essence - available at all good health stores.
9. The amino acid L-Glutamine helps to keep your concentration up on long flights especially if you are travelling on business and need to keep alert. Take 1-2 grams during flight.
10. Take Vitamin E to keep the blood thin and prevent it from clotting, to guard against the possibility of developing DVT. Take 400iu at least one week prior to travelling and during the flight.
11. Also to prevent DVT make sure that you take time to stroll around the cabin regularly, stretching your legs. Also do some stretching exercises while sitting in your seat.
12. On your return to the UK, try Acupuncture, Reiki, Cranio-Sacral Therapy or Shiatsu to help your body rebalance.

| What's the carbon footprint of a heart bypass operation? |
 |
|
If you want to go green, look after your health - a major operation compares to two short-haul flights. Yes, the carbon footprint of a heart bypass operation is
1.1 tonnes of CO2e
The carbon cost of healthcare in the UK is around 170g per pound spent. That makes it a fairly low-carbon way of spending money. And in terms of the quality of life improvements we stand to gain from it, healthcare when we need it must be one of best ways of spending our carbon budget.
That said, a big operation clocks up a big footprint. The typical cost of a heart bypass to the UK's National Health Service is £6324. If we assume that this operation is averagely carbon intensive, it adds up to more than 1 tonne of CO2e. That's around a month's total emissions for the typical UK citizen - or a couple of return flights from London to Madrid.
Overall, UK healthcare has a footprint of 27m tonnes CO2e, or just over 3% of the national consumption footprint. Of that, electricity and fuel used by health services accounts for less than one-third. Drugs account for nearly one-fifth. Here's a full breakdown:
- Pharmaceuticals 20%
- Fuel 16%
- Electricity 13%
- Medical instruments 10%
- Sewage and sanitary 4%
- Transport 4%
- Paper and card 2%
- Other 31%
