alexander technique Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique teaches us to use our body in a better way, helping to undo the effects of stress and tension from daily life.

In understanding how we take physical and mental stress into everyday movement we can restore natural alignment and balance, bringing ease of movement back into the body. Understanding the principles of the technique and putting the skills into practice lets us manage stress we hold in the body and regain co-ordination and poise.

Learning to use our whole self well and to undo tension around the body allows us to experience better posture contributing to increased wellbeing as well as reducing aches and pain from misuse.

The Alexander Technique is a practical way of being in better balance and is available to all, whether you want to reduce posture-related pain such as backache, shoulder or neck pain, enhance creative performance or increase overall health and energy.

When you learn Alexander Technique and put it into practice, you will transform everyday aches, pains and stress into energy, confidence and a relaxed, easy posture. Lessons are taught one to one through gentle guidance and light hands on touch.

How does Alexander Technique work?

The principle is simple: As busy adults, we expect a great deal of our body. We expect it to be happy slumped over a desk for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. We expect it to tolerate the stress of daily life: public transport in the rush hour, shopping, driving, and getting the kids to school and ourselves to work.

Our body has to adapt and it does so by developing bad posture, which feels comfortable in the short term but is harmful in the long term. But if our body can learn bad posture, it can unlearn it too. The Alexander Technique helps us to unlearn faulty posture and regain the natural co-ordination of childhood.

What happens in an Alexander Technique session?

The lessons involve only gentle movement. You will not be going through a series of exercises, nor will you be receiving a massage. The teaching room consists of just an upright chair to sit on and a raised table to lie on. With these tools you work together with the teacher to develop awareness and release tension around the body.

You don’t have to wear anything special - just loose trousers or leggings, and a comfortable T-shirt or sweatshirt.
