"Quite simply one of the most straight forward and effective 'hands-on' therapies available"
Jane Alexander, Daily Mail

What is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, relaxing and very precise though non-invasive soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator Tom Bowen.

The technique does not impose a particular approach and there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue. The Bowen Technique was developed as a musculo-skeletal therapy, but also affects the body's systems, such as the immune and nervous systems. Because it calms the body's nervous system, it is also highly effective as part of a stress management programme.

How does Bowen Technique work?

Put simply, it allows the body to reset and heal itself. The Bowen Technique is sometimes described as a dialogue between your body and your therapist. This dialogue encourages a gentle response which empowers your body's own resources to begin healing itself.

Each treatment session usually results in a deep sense of overall relaxation, allowing the body to recharge and balance itself.

Who chooses Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is suitable for adults and children, from newborn babies to the very elderly. Our clients come from all over East Sussex, and even further afield.

What conditions can Bowen Technique help?

Bowen Technique treats the whole person, not individual conditions or diseases, though there are many specific conditions for which it has shown remarkable results:

Musculo-skeletal pain such as Back pain, Neck pain, Frozen Shoulder, Sciatica

Neck and Shoulder problems (including whiplash)

Jaw/TMJ problems

Knee and Ankle problems

Arthritic pain

Tennis elbow

Carpel tunnel syndrome/RSI

Sports injuries

Migraine/Headaches

Fibromyalgia

Respiratory Problems including Asthma & Bronchitis, Hay fever & Sinusitis

Digestive Disorders including Constipation, Indigestion, IBS, Colic, Chrohn's disease

ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Tinnitus

Earache and ear infections

Menstrual irregularities/ PMT/Menopausal symptoms

Infertility/ Pregnancy conditions

Mastitis

Skin problems/Eczema

Eating disorders

Haemorrhoids

Stress management/Relaxation

Like most complementary therapies, the Bowen Technique can be also be used as a prevention rather than cure. It can correct imbalances at an early stage so that they do not develop into more serious conditions.

What happens in a treatment?

You normally lie, fully clothed, on a comfortable treatment couch, though you may also sit in a chair if preferred. Your therapist uses fingers or thumbs to gently move over your muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia.

As it takes a holistic approach, an initial Bowen treatment will address the whole body as well as your presenting problems. Although the treatment will vary from one individual to another, the therapist will normally make moves over your lower and mid back & legs, and your upper back & shoulders as you lie on your front before finishing with some neck moves as you lie on your back.

Between moves your therapist will leave the room to allow you to rest. This is a key element of Bowen and is an extremely important aspect of the technique. The break allows your body the opportunity to make a decision about what action needs to be taken in response to the moves your therapist has performed.
Each session normally lasts up to one hour.

Common reactions may include tiredness, stiffness, headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased dream activity and even a temporary increase in your presenting symptoms. Other responses may include hot and cold flushes, emotional release and/or thirst. These are all positive signs that the healing process is working, and such responses usually clear within days.

Aftercare advice given to each client will emphasise the importance of movement, the drinking of water and the return for further treatment. If you experience a strong reaction, please contact your therapist for advice.

Most people will have responses within three to four sessions, when even long standing chronic pain can be relieved. In order to maintain optimum health, regular treatments every six to eight weeks are recommended.
