Counselling
"He's an exceptional man. It's a completely different ball game with Trevor. He has an extraordinary empathy and I've found these sessions very empowering. He's helped me put life into perspective. I feel so much better now - it really has been life changing." Jo Rowden 20/06/07
What is counselling?
Counselling provides an opportunity for an individual (or couple) to work towards living in a more satisfying and resourceful way. It may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insight and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others. The counsellor’s role is to facilitate the client’s work in ways which respect the client’s values, personal resources and capacity for self-determination.
How can counselling help?
"He helps others most, who shows them how to help themselves". A. P. Gouthey
The purpose of counselling is to help people discover more effective ways of living with themselves and achieving what they need from life. It offers the opportunity to explore important issues in a safe and confidential environment. In listening without judgement, the counsellor supports the necessary process of self-discovery and understanding. Through honestly exploring patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour that may hold us back from living life to the full, we can discover our strengths and weaknesses. This knowledge enables us to cope with our difficulties and find our own solutions.
What problems can be helped by counselling?
People come to counselling for many reasons, including:
Relationship and family problems
Loss, including separation, bereavement or redundancy
The trauma of abuse
Low self esteem or confidence
Stress related ill health
Difficulties at work
Coping with change
Depression or anxiety
Inner conflict
Self-development & personal insight
Treatment
Initially, clients come for a one-hour session to assess whether counsellor and client feel that they can work together. Some people need only a short series of sessions, whilst others may decide a longer period of ongoing support is appropriate. Usually people decide to come for counselling on a weekly basis, with an initial contract of six sessions. However, this will depend on individual circumstances.
Our counsellors are accredited by the British Association
