Meditation
"Excellent
course all round, thank you! Best meditation course I've been on. Good fun
too. Very well run and taught. Also a good venue and relaxed atmosphere."
Jane Butler, Portslade
"I'd been looking for a non-denominational meditation course for ages
and here I found James' course that fit all my requirements perfectly. It
has reinforced my belief that I will really benefit from incorporating meditation
into my daily life. It's a shame it had to end!" Linda Deacon, Barcombe
" I would welcome another course and/or a regular evening practice
with shared ideas and guidance. I found the course to be straightforward and
a safe way into meditating, easy to put into practice yet with wonderful opportunities
and benefits. There was no pressure to reveal anything about ourselves unless
we wanted to. James was welcoming and generous." Karen Laver, Lewes
"I
found the course very interesting and fun to do. James is friendly and explained
things in a way I could understand. Thank you." Charles Smith, Hastings
"A lot of thought and care has gone into this course and I appreciate
the presenter's honesty and commitment." Linda Tyrrell, Chalvington
Why is Meditation becoming more and more popular in the West?
The idea of the practice of meditation, more often than not, has religious connotations and is often associated with the philosophies of the East, particularly Buddhism, because these traditions have developed meditation as a spiritual discipline. But a meditative state is merely a state of mind.
And as we all
have mind, we can all practise meditation. It is not the exclusive preserve
of religious ascetics or the spiritually advanced. It is not even necessary
to subscribe to any belief system, or indeed to have any spiritual beliefs
whatsoever in order to practice meditation and benefit from doing so.
What is Meditation?
There are various ways to practice meditation and there are different aims and goals that the participant may wish to attain. Whilst it is true that meditation is fundamentally a spiritual exercise when practiced seriously and deeper levels of attunement or consciousness are aspired to, there are more basic forms of meditation that, generally speaking, seem to better suit the Western temperament and that have the very practical aim of achieving greater health and peace of mind, as more and more people in the UK and other western countries are finding out.
The act of meditation in its most basic form is the focusing of the mind to relax the body fully, to calm the mind and control the usually chaotic thought patterns that we all normally experience - and that can cause us so much stress. We are psychosomatic beings and mind does have a profound impact upon the physical body, either acting for our well being or acting to our detriment, depending upon our level of self awareness.
We like to think that we are in control of our thoughts. But long established mental habits thrive and are usually in control of us. Simple exercises in self awareness would soon prove that these thought patterns exist and are damaging to our health. To practice meditation is to take control of our thoughts to alleviate the damage, both to our health and to our potential, which ingrained thought patterns can cause.
