What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathy is a system of medicine that employs various natural methods for maintaining health and preventing or treating disease. It is also a way of life based upon a return to nature in regulating the diet and lifestyle.
Naturopaths assume a 'vitalistic approach' in suggesting that good health is more than the mere absence of disease. By incorporating a variety of new principles of living, an individual is enabled to become more aligned with nature, the benefits of which are an increase in health, vitality and a greater sense of wellbeing. This is holistic medicine, where both physical and mental components of health are recognised.
History
Although the term Naturopathy was not used until the late 19th century, its philosophical roots can be traced back to the ancient Hippocratic school of medicine. Hippocrates was the first naturalistic doctor in recorded history. He viewed disease as an 'effect' and looked for its 'cause' in natural phenomena such as air, water and food.
The school used the term 'vis medicatrix naturae' (the healing power of nature) which refers to the body's ability to heal itself. This principle is fundamental to the practice of Naturopathy.
Philosophy
Knowing the inherent restorative power of the body to overcome disease, given the right conditions, it is the responsibility of the Naturopath to:
* Treat the whole
person
* Find and treat the underlying cause of disease, as well as the symptoms
* Educate a patient in the proper laws of healthy living
* Support
the body's own healing abilities by using the least invasive intervention
that will have the desired therapeutic effect
This philosophy necessitates a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic skills - hence the eclectic interest of the Naturopathic profession.
Contemporary Naturopathy
Modern Naturopathy has its roots in tradition, though there is a growing body of scientific research which lends support to current practices and also provides an impetus for innovative therapeutics.
Nutritional therapy - this is the foundation of naturopathy, as natural diet is the foundation of life. There is an increasing body of knowledge to support the use of whole foods and quality nutritional supplementation.
Herbal medicine - plants have been used as medicine since antiquity. Naturopaths are professionally trained herbalists
Homeopathy - Naturopathic training utilises this vibrational medicine for acute conditions
Iridology - the eyes being 'the window to the soul' can elicit information about the whole body. This technique can highlight areas needing extra attention.
Counselling and lifestyle modification - the emphasis is on the reduction of stress & eliciting ways to increase health, fitness & happiness.

What happens during a Naturopathic consultation?
Your first visit will be for one hour. The Naturopath will look at your main health concerns, your past medical history, family history, diet and lifestyle choices and then undertake a quick review of all the body systems.
This extensive
collation of information allows a clear picture of the underlying causes of
ill health to become evident; hence the correct treatment can be given. Subsequent
consultations are important in order to track progress made and refine the
treatment programme.
