Pilates Tweet
".... an exceedingly good teacher. She gives a very clear explanation of what to do - and why - and which muscles are involved." Ann Maskrey 21/03/07
"I have attended a number of Pilates classes and Sylvia, our instructor, is brilliant. She provides wonderful guidance and great individual attention. Without these classes my back problem would be a lot worse! Thank you again." Malcolm Hyder 18/06/11
We
have Pilates for you! Courses and individual tuition for all levels. Our tutors,
Silvia, Rebecca and Tansy, are highly respected and experienced - and
well known for their Pilates classes throughout East Sussex.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is far more than just a muscle toning, stretching and relaxation programme. By developing core abdominal strength, Pilates ensures that whatever activity you undertake your spine is supported and protected. For this reason Pilates is recommended as a rehabilitation programme for back problems by health specialists such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths.
The Spine - the backbone of Pilates
The spine supports
the weight of the body and has a natural S shape that absorbs shock and enables
it to move freely. Our lifestyle often involves long periods of sitting in
front of a desk/ computer screen/ television. This encourages the spine to
move out of its natural shape and often causes pain in the back, neck or shoulders.
To regain
the natural curvature of the spine and alleviate pain we need to strengthen
certain muscles known as the core stabilising muscles. Unlike the superficial
muscles, the postural muscles can initially be difficult to locate and activate.
However, once they have been strengthened, Pilates exercises can become more
complex.
Balance, movement
and resistance are added to challenge and improve the core strength, and to
tone and lengthen other muscles.
