What is Pilates?
Pilates is far more than just a muscle toning, stretching and relaxation programme. By developing core abdominal strength, Pilates ensures that whatever activity you undertake your spine is supported and protected. For this reason Pilates is recommended as a rehabilitation programme for back problems by health specialists such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths.
The Spine - the backbone of Pilates
The spine supports the weight of the body and has a natural S shape that absorbs shock and enables it to move freely. Our lifestyle often involves long periods of sitting in front of a desk/ computer screen/ television. This encourages the spine to move out of its natural shape and often causes pain in the back, neck or shoulders.
To regain the
natural curvature of the spine and alleviate pain we need to strengthen certain
muscles known as the core stabilising muscles. Unlike the superficial muscles,
the postural muscles can initially be difficult to locate and activate. However,
once they have been strengthened, Pilates exercises can become more complex.
Balance, movement and resistance are added to challenge and improve the core
strength, and to tone and lengthen other muscles.
